How to Make Monkey Birthday Party Invitations

Sharing is caring!

I made these invitations when the twins turned one. They are so stinkin’ cute and I knew I wanted to make them for Matthew this year to celebrate his second birthday.

You’ll want to find a packet of neutral colored card stock. I bought a 50 count pack of brown-paper-sack colored paper to use for the main template of the monkey and then I also purchased a packet of assorted neutral colored card stock to use for the accents.

I used this monkey invitation template that I found online five years ago. When you print it, it will look like this (minus the creases and wrinkles):

You can keep it the original at size if you want, and fold the invitation in half as the upper template indicates. Personally, I like to double the size of the bottom template and I do not fold it. If you purchase envelopes at the office supply store that are 4×6, the invitations mail perfectly without being folded.

I do make two copies of the template, again, only using the bottom monkey. I cut one copy out to use for tracing the whole head, and then I use the second copy to cut and trace the mouth and inner ears.

Once you’ve  made and cut your templates, trace the head on the brown-paper-sack colored card stock and cut it out.

Next, trace the mouth  and inner ears onto camel colored card stock, like I did here:

Cut the mouth and inner ears out and use scrapbook glue (to prevent excessive bleed through, etc.) and put the pieces in places as illustrated here:

Then I like to glue on the eyes. I like to use the wiggly eyes and I purchase a medium size, although I’ve done a smaller size as well. You can also get the eyes that are self adhesive, or just use the scrapbooking glue to secure them in place.

Then, I purchase little black buttons.  These are 7 MM in size. I like to use a very small dab of Elmer’s glue to secure them in place. And if the glue overflows from the edges a bit, no big deal, it will dry clear and you’ll never know it.

At this point you can also cut down a red pipe cleaner and form it into a smile. Use small dots of Elmer’s glue to secure it to the mouth section of the monkey. If you use too much glue it will make the pipe cleaner super weird. Just trust me. And the Elmer’s glue is easier to apply to the pipe cleaner than the scrapbook glue.

I like to add some hair… ya know, make it look like a baby monkey with crazy hair. I get golden rod colored yarn and cut 4-5 pieces and glue them down at the top of the head.

For the back, I found a stamp this time around that I could use to capture of the main details for the party. I purchased some matching ink in the shade of rich cocoa and a brown colored Sharpie to hand write the details. I used the stamp on the camel colored card stock.

I always like to write a poem as well. I love the free, downloadable, font from  Peas for Fonts  called Pea Bandit.   I print it in a dark brown color as well.

I backed the poem and the RSVP info.  in dark brown card stock, using the scrapbook glue, just to add a little detail. I did not want anything too busy or too time consuming.

Using the scrapbook glue I attached them both to the back of the invite to give this final look:

These monkey invites, are probably my all time favorites. They are just so adorable and playful…. who couldn’t resist them?!
