How to Naturally Clean Fruits and Veggies #HeinzVinegar

Sharing is caring!

Do you know how dirty the fruits and veggies are that you bring home from the store? Obviously there is pesticide on the non-organic fruits and veggies, but even the organic stuff can be dirty and needs to be washed.

While I always wash my produce before I use it, I am not always good at washing it before I put it into the crisper drawers.

The produce cleaners can be pricy and really I wonder if they are much better for us to ingest.

I have an all natural way to clean produce, and it is very helpful if you do this process before putting it away, but can do it at any point. It is always nice to have clean produce in the fridge waiting for the kids to snack on.

I am going to share this simple produce cleaning recipe with you as I participate in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Heinz Vinegar. I received a product sample to facilitate this review and as a thank me for participating.

Gather your produce.

I keep a lot of fruits on hand for snacking and to use as dinner sides. I also keep bell peppers and cucumbers on hand to add into our dinner salads.

fresh fruits and veggies

Add as many as you can to the bowl at a time.

Let them site for 5 minutes or so. I move the fruit around every few minutes since a lot of them float. I like to ensure all sides get clean.

After 5 minutes remove the fruit from the water and rinse them well over cold water.

Pat dry.

Repeat the process for other fruits using the same solution as long as it is not too dirty.

I even did strawberries. You just want to ensure you rinse and dry them well before putting them back in the fridge to prevent molding quickly.

  1. And I thought I already knew all the uses of vinegar! I never thought of it as a fruit & veggie wash though! Great tip! We most often use it as a counter cleaner:)

    1. Vinegar has so many uses. Now that we are a dog owner we have also been using it as a disinfectant for “accidents”.

  2. How funny that you post this, as I just tweeted out this tip the other day. I do this for my berries especially to last longer and not lose flavor. 🙂

    1. I love this. I have been known to just pour vinegar over produce and then rinse with water when in a hurry, but soaking is likely the best method. I have also heard of people adding some salt to the water to help draw out the dirt even more, but I have never done that. I know a friend who has been doing that for years.

      Thanks for stopping by Jennifer!
