United States Postal Service Looking to Close 3,700 Locations

Sharing is caring!

If you’ve watched the news recently you may have seen that the United States Postal Service is considering closing over 3,000 post offices over the next year because they are financially strained and they must cut costs due to a huge deficit. In an effort to continue being self-sufficient, this seems to be one of the top options to prevent a further deficit.

The Postmaster General also recently announced their plan to discontinue Saturday mail delivery as well, this saving them 3 billion dollars annually.

Wondering if your post office is one on the potential closing list? Check the list out and let me know what you think.

I would also love to know how, or if, you will be affected by no mail delivery on Saturday’s.Do you feel that these proposals are a solution?

I am eager to read your thoughts in the comments.

  1. I was curious to see if any of the Post Offices I am familiar with were on the list… But luckily none of them are. I grew up in a rural area of NM that I was sure might be closing down at least one or more of the neighboring POs but they aren’t listed. So safe so far… It would be really tough on the people that still live there to lose those… The nearest one would be too far away to be able to get your mail even on a weekly basis!

I don’t feel like Saturday delivery would affect me personally that month. It’s always been one of those things I don’t really count on anyway… I just assume I’ll wait until Monday.

  2. Lori Thomas says:

Nope none closing in surrounding areas near me…. as for no mail Saturday, wouldn`t care one way or the other

  3. None near me either, but we aren’t exactly rural.

In Canada, where I grew up, there is no mail delivery on Saturdays, there hasn’t been as long as I can remember.

Our PO is inefficient at best. I actually avoid it at all costs, and go to a neighboring city or a rapid-mail place. The staff is rather unpleasant, the lines are insane, and I’ve had them lost a fair amount of things over the years, including a “Hold-Mail” form when we were on a 3 week vacation, to which I got a letter saying we needed to submit one or have someone pick up our mail. Um, I did submit one, it’s not my fault you people cannot do your job properly. And then there’s my mail delivery guy who doesn’t want to get out of his car to put mail in the box. Again, it’s not my fault or problem where my neighbors park their cars, mine are in the garage, so you’d better get your happy butt out of your vehicle and give me my mail. Take it up with the homeowners next door (the post guy actually told me that he wouldn’t deliver the mail with cars blocking the box, except the cars weren’t mine, I don’t like him much either).

I’m honestly not a huge fan of the postal service, they need better management and the ability to fire cranky employees.

  4. I checked the post office closings list and it doesn’t affect my city. I rarely have to go to the post office anyways. Maybe twice a year. As for Saturday delivery….better for me 1 more day without seeing bills in the mail : )

  5. I have mixed feelings about the issue.

As an retailer we rely heavily on the Postal Service. We are located about a block from the post office in rural Maine. The Postal service has provided a great service at a competetive price.
The closest UPS or Fed Ex is 30 miles away and just wouldn’t work well for us.

As a home owner we are located so close to the Post Office that our mail is not delivered. We have to go to the Post Office to pick it up. An inconvienence so we don’t get our mail daily. Closing the Post Office would bring our mail right to our door.

But we’re talking about a lot of savings here when our country needs to save money. Giving up Saturday mail delivery and closing some locations, if it will save the taxpayer some $, is a good thing. Using the money for elferly services which, in my opinion, is more important.

So far our Post Office is not on the list.

  6. my dad has been a mail carrier for 20 some years… and you know what’s crazy… he’s always been on overtime. they are always short on help and just announced that they are hiring (something the USPS does not do often).

    1. I hear ya, Julia.

My brother in law was a mail carrier for about a decade. He was so overworked. He was actually a carrier and walked 20+ miles every day to deliver his route- rain, sleet or snow. He talks about how dreadful it was. From what I hear from him, they really treat employees yucky, but the benefits are great. It was hard to have a life outside of the post office, he worked 6 days a week. You just have to weigh your options on what you can take and tolerate I suppose. It affected his health (heart) and that was the final straw.

  7. I have an Uncle whom is a retired postman and I can’t imagine what those that aren’t are going to do! this is horrible. I can understand post offices closing on Sat. but the whole building?! saddening.

  8. None on the proposed closing list near my rural area. Sad to close but budget does dictate spendatures.

  9. We don’t have any on the list, but I know they are trying to close the one by me which is conveniently 1.2 miles away. I have signed petition after petition. I use it a few times a week to ship items from my etsy shop. That will be an inconvenience for me. Saturdays I don’t think I will care either way, but I do worry about those people who depend on that pay working those hours. I am sure it will trickle down to everyone somehow.
