Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (Movie Review)

Sharing is caring!

My kids and I were invited to screen the latest Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules earlier this week before it officially hit the big screen.  They were so impressed.

We drove to Dallas, which is a big deal on a school night. We sat in press seating labeled with signs that said Red Wristbands Only. We were so cool, let me tell you.

You may remember last fall there were a few of us DFW bloggers who had the opportunity to interview the author and two main characters, Greg and Rowley. They were truly the coolest kids. They had just finished filming Rodrick Rules and were reminiscing about the fun they had shooting and the things they certainly would not miss. Rowley said he did not miss his haircut. Watch the movie and you’ll see what he means.

Was Rodrick Rules any good?

I know you’re wondering.

We really enjoyed it. We had some friends with us, meaning the childrens’ ages ranged from 14 down to 5. Everyone was laughing- adults as well. Garrett and Anthony have not stopped talking about it. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules posters are officially blasted on their bedroom walls.

Should you watch it in the theaters?

Yes! It is totally worth paying for movie tickets to see-  parents you will not be bored. And then, rent it when it comes out on video. It is totally a great family movie night pick as well.

Rodrick Rules Highlights:

  • Every boys’ worst nightmare comes true when Greg is caught running out in public wearing nothing but his tighty whiteys.
  • CATS meets Black Swan talent show moment that left my boys laughing the whole way home. Boys laugh over the silliest stuff.
  • Bird poo. Need I say more?
  • A nose picking foot. Creepy! 🙂
  • Where’s Jeff Kinney (the author of the series)? I spotted him twice in the movie.  Look for him in the church scene and talent show scene.
  • You learn Fregley will eat ANYTHING! So gross. My twins now think it is funny to stick gum behind their ears.
  • Rodrick’s driving will scare every parent out there and lead you to the conclusion that our children should not drive until they are 33.  Maybe 40.
  • Greg gets stuck in the ladies restroom at a nursing home and they confuse him for a peeping tom.  So funny!
  • Ever gone out in public with a chocolate candy bar smeared to your rear? Ever gone to church with a chocolate candy bar smeared to your rear and the girl you have a crush on is there?

Did I connect with anyone in the movie?

I will embarrassingly admit, I am Greg’s mother. Oh my goodness gracious. I possibly live in denial about what my children are doing behind my back and I might be a tad bit naieve. If you are a parent reading this, you’ll understand what I am saying as soon as you watch the movie. My kids make us second guess our sanity- on a daily basis!

Take the kids to see it this weekend- the whole family will enjoy it. Come back and let me know what you think.
