Making Snacks Accessible in the Fridge

by Crystal · 16 comments

in life in general, mom stuff, mommy struggles

This is what I do to make a snack area in the fridge accessible to my little kids who can not reach high.

I have a drawer that holds washed and ready to eat produce, juice boxes, yogurt, cheese sticks, apple sauce, fruit cups, etc. (The drawer above the snack drawer is for lunch meat, hot dogs, block and shredded cheese. The drawer below the snack drawer is where I keep the produce I cook with and stuff to make salads.)

Obviously it does not stay this organized all the time, and I am ok with that. It certainly gets messy and scattered. No matter what, they know where healthy snacks are in the fridge!

Super simple. Totally manageable. Love it!

Check out my post on  keeping fruit and veggie trays on hand to make healthy eating easy.

What do you do at your house to make healthy eating and snacks accessible for your little ones?

Emily- all of my children can open the fridge. My youngest has been opening it since he was 1. My youngest is two now and he goes in gets his applesauce, grabs a spoon from the drawer or dishwasher and brings it to me to open.

But you bring up a very valid point. :)

Jill, do not be fooled. Every aspect of my house is not organized. I struggle any many areas, mostly because there are five little people and one big person who come behind me and throw a wrench in the gears. However, the snack drawer is appreciated by all in our home and used by all. Even though it does not stay ‘organized perfectly’, the kids know they can grab cheese sticks, juice boxes, yogurt, apple sauce, etc. from this drawer any day of the week. :)

Thanks so much for reading!

What a great idea! I thought about doing this with snacks that didn’t need to be refrigerated so I LOVE your idea…they would definitely know what their choices were! I would love if you would link up this project to our {{What I Made Wednesday Linky Party}}! Thanks!

Fabulous idea! I’m working on trying to get the kids to be more aware of healthier choices too. Definitely challenging at times! :)

This is a great idea! I should do the same thing in the pantry, make their own shelf. Only thing is I think mine would snack all day long if I didn’t control it. I always make mine ask and I get it for them and they are 10,6 and 5 yrs old lol. Please stop by and link up to my party this weekend at http://designergarden.blogspot.com/2011/06/vip-party-18.html
