So, you’re having twins…how will you ever get a shower?

Sharing is caring!

Crystal & Co - Twins

Awe, the million dollar question.

Such a simple task… yet, you will reach a point where you would give a million bucks to take one shower.

Feel refreshed.

Feel clean.

(Friends and family of those with twins, once in a while offer. Just stop by and say… go jump in the shower and let me care for the little ones for a few minutes. This means as much to a mom of twins as a steak dinner means to most men!)

Moms of twins, here are my suggestions and the things that worked for me.

The easiest thing to do is get up before everyone and start your day with a shower. Seems easy hua? Many days this is possible, but not all days. There will be times you are just too exhausted and another 20 minutes of sleep is vital. Then the babies are up and a shower is now just a dream. There will be days (ok, nights) where it seems like you’ve never gotten to go to bed because one baby or the other just keeps waking up.

Ideally, I personally liked getting up about 3:30 in the morning when the twins were little. Yes, three.thirty.in.the.morning. From 3:30 until it was time to get big kids up for school at 6:30 I could get a lot done. I could get my shower, have some coffee, have some time to myself, and get things in order before the day started. (This was also at a time when I worked about 20 hours a week from home and volunteered a lot at our school. I could prepare all kinds of things during these three hours.)

Obviously, you can not do that every single day.

Soon you’ll find yourself pressed with days where it is one o’clock in the afternoon and you have yet a spare moment to brush your teeth and take a shower. Those soap operas are just too interesting to walk away from.

Kidding!

When pressed with these days, you ideally will jump in the shower when the twins are down for a nap. Take advantage of those naps!

Unfortunately, there will be days where it is one o’clock in the afternoon and both babies are not napping at the same time. You get one down the other one is {still} awake and you’ve still not had a shower.

What to do, what to do. Here is the plan…

Put them in the shower with you. This works for the baby stage, the moving around stage, onto the walking stage and even onto the they-might-burn-the-house-down-while-i-am-in-the-shower-stage.

As babies, grab two baby bathing beds like the one pictured here that I found over at Baby Ant.com. They can sit in these inside the tub, within your reach, as you shower… and go ahead and clean them up while you’re in there and scratch bathing the babies off your to-do-list while you’re at it.

Once your twins are old enough to crawl around, stick them in these neat seats (found on the same website) in the tub while you shower. Give them a few toys to play with. If your tub is not big enough for you and these two seats, just let them sit in the tub with you while you shower. They will very likely enjoy the water streaming over them.

Once they reach the toddler age, you can still stick them in the shower with you and spray some shaving cream on the tiles and let them create while you shower. Still to this day, there are many times this is a lifesaver for me. I’ve had to stick the twins and the baby in the shower with me just to finally get a shower for myself!

So, You’re Having Twins…. is a series here at Crystal & Co. I am not a doctor, I am not a counselor, I am not a person who studies childhood behaviors. I am something bigger than that…. I AM a mom of TWINS (who are child 3 and 4 on the food chain at our house) and I can share what works (and has worked) for us as well as pointers on how to survive. I would have loved to find this information all in one place in the summer of 2005 when I was given the life changing news…. so, you’re having twins! If you are having twins, or know someone who is, share the So, You’re Having Twins.... series with them.

You are brave…very very brave…for bringing the kids INTO the shower with you!

From day one I have gotten up long before the rest of the house. I am one of those people that feels good about myself if I do my hair and make-up every day. I also enjoy being able to take my time and not rush as it ruins the rest of my day.

I few months back I attempted to shower when the kids were up…I posted about it…lets just say it was a cold & dark shower and the fastest one I've ever taken 🙂

I'm afraid to even pee with the twins awake! They are 2 and it's amazing what they can do in the 2 minutes it takes me to pee.

These have become my favorite posts of yours 🙂

    Shaving cream… brilliant!

too bad babies aren't more like dogs. When I'm in the bathroom, my dogs just sit calmly outside the door waiting for me to come out.

Erin- I am not brave… It is simply survival for me. 🙂

Debbie- When my twins were 2 years old, they cracked 17 eggs in my living room floor while I was in abother room for maybe 3 minutes. They make quick work of it! You can read that post here: https://crystalandcomp.com/2008/04/egg-crackin-fun.html

Cancun- I am so happy you are enjoying this. I feel like I have something to share with people… babies do not come with manuals… nor do multiples.

I love seeing other moms of multiples share their tips as well. Their advice may be different from mine, but it all helps someone. And afterall, knowledge is power!

    Thanks for reading ladies!
