So, you’re having twins… (a series is born)

Sharing is caring!

Breathe.

Breathe again.

Grab a brown paper bag before you hyperventilate.

If this is your first delivery, or if these twins will make for baby number 3 and 4…. you’re life is about to change forever! But you already know that, don’t you?

Do not freak out.

You’re still breathing, right?

I laughed hysterically when my ob/gyn read the sonogram at 5 weeks and 6 days as I laid on a cold examination bed in a freezing room starring at a poster of George Clooney plastered to the ceiling.

Hi George! You laughing, too?

(And has anyone ever figured out why they must use a condom on those sonogram wands? Can’t they make covers/protectors specifically for those devices? A condom that does not fit… really? Something that has always disturbed me! Or, was my doctor just cheap?)

I immediately called Lenny, who freaked out as his mind turned into dollar bills while soaking in the fact that we were likely going to be poor for the next 18 years. But, as a twin himself he felt the ‘twin connection’.

Then I called my mother, who laughed with me. She too is a twin and knew the road that was ahead of me. And she thinks craziness is something to laugh about.

You can laugh, too. Laughing is what I do when I don’t know what else to do.

Then, my default reaction set in hard and I denied that having twins would be hard or challenging. I only thought about the cute things… like matching clothes, sweet little coos, and baby names. Denial is a happy place for me. It buys me some time.

If you found out today you are having twins, or a friend of yours is having twins, or your daughter is expecting twins, start here! Send them the link to my blog!

I am four years into this twin challenge, and it is more entertaining than any Survivor episode I’ve ever seen. And it is all about surviving!

Then, go and buy this book- When You’re Expecting Twins, Triplets or Quads. This will keep you (or them) busy for a while… because I know, you (they) are freaking out!

It covers all the things to consider, to ponder and what you’re stressing about! The technical things, how you’re feeling, what is ahead, what is happening in that belly of yours, your emotions, meal plans to optimize birth weight… everything in one great book!

A great place to start, since wine is out of the question. Well, not totally out of the question, but pretty much.

It occurred to me this is something I should be sharing with my readers- my twin raising experience. Today the series ‘So, You’re Having Twins…’ is born at Crystal & Co. I am not a doctor, I am not a counselor, I am not a studier of childhood behaviors. I am something bigger than that…. I AM a mom of twins (who are child 3 and 4 on the food chain at our house) and I can share my story and what works for us. I would have loved to find this information all in one place five years ago!

  1. The best thing about having a friend with twins? You always have a baby to hold. When I would see Crystal and the twin, she would be like "Here. Take a baby. Enjoy!"

Kim, you're funny! But it is true. If you have a friend with twins…. just know that when you hold one of them, you're providing a break more valuable than words can explain!

Congrats on having two little ones on the way!! I'm sure there will be some challenges, but it will be great having two that are exactly the same age!!

I have wondered the same thing about those "condoms." What is up with that?

  13. That book was my bible while I was pregnant with twins. It is a great great book!
I laughed so hard at the part about the condom on the wand. I had never experienced that before my twin pregnancy and had a hard time being serious about it. In fact, once they were done my husband made some crack about me needing a cigarette (total joke as we don't smoke, but you get it). They even asked me if I wanted to do it myself. Uh..no thanks, I'll pass.
I had a sonogram at 5 weeks and they didn't see two babies. I thought, ok normal pregnancy. 5 weeks later, I was shocked to see two little things in there. I believe there was much laughing, followed by the lovely realm of denial.
This is a great series and a great idea. I can't wait to read more!

  14. Sonora- thanks for reading! So you were 10 weeks when you found out?

From that first appt where my doctor confirmed twins at 5 weeks and 6 days, his famous words every visit were 'There are at least two in there.'. Each visit when he would check heartbeats and stats and even the sonogram visits those were his words. And he always said it with a half smile… he knew it drove me nuts. At least two???? Not funny! But I loved my doctor-he delivered all of my children.

If they had found a third one in there I have no idea what I would have done.
